Just over a week
…since I first got my iPhone. Switching from a Sony Ericsson C905. I had a feeling I was gonna regret it, though. The C905 has such an awesome camera, and OK functions otherwise. I was scared that the iPhone wouldn’t impress me as much as I had hoped, and that switching to a more expensive plan would be a bad move.
So far though, I can’t say I’ve experienced either of the above. Simply because the iPhone is amazing. No other phone comes close to being as innovative, extensible and plain impressive as the iPhone does, not even close. First of all, it does, well, everything. I now have Facebook, Twitter, MSN, Gmail, Safari, Bejeweled, heck, even Fourtrack for recording my piano sessions. And as if I couldn’t be more impressed: the headphone jack even works as a mic input, and lets me record in amazing sound quality if I use my studio mic. The built-in speaker is a lot better than on other phones, and I could actually read in bed with music playing without getting the feeling that I was stuck in a tin can.
And then I discovered the more advanced functions. How you can press the power and home buttons at the same time, and it’ll screenshot. How you can actually make a frozen program quit, just by pressing the home button for 6 seconds. And a ton of other minor, yet incredible functions. There’s so much right about the iPhone. How amazingly reactive the display is (the HTC Touch Diamond doesn’t even come close to touching the iPhone in that sense). How smooth the visual effects are. How easy the on-screen keyboard is to use. And so on. And so on.
I will admit, however, some things aren’t in place. One upside is that with the next software version, we get Copy-Cut-Paste and MMS, two things I personally feel should be part of any smartphone. Or any mobile phone, actually. Another thing I miss about it is the ability to get custom ringtones and alarm tones. I wanna use Radiohead’s Everything In Its Right Place as my ringtone, but since the iPhone apparently can’t give me that, I’m stuck with this plain old ringtone instead. I don’t mind too much, but it’s one of the minor things I miss.
All in all: one week, and I’m still amazed. There doesn’t seem to be anything the iPhone CAN’T do, and with the new software version, things are bound to get even better. I’m looking forward to that.
All of a sudden, I get what the hype is all about.
